The first half of the program will feature Western European music in the sacred choral tradition. The Chorale will sing parts of Mozart's "Vesperae Solennes de Confessore", composed for liturgical use in the Salzburg Cathedral. This famed piece is one of Mozart's most memorable works for the church. Other selections include Francesco Durante's (1684-1755) "Misericordias Domini" and "Salvation is Created", by Paul Tschesnokoff (1877-1944). "Lamentations of Jerimiah" by Z. Randall Stroope is a passionate yet mournful piece that will move the listener. Pulitzer Prize winning composer Samuel Barber's familiar "Agnus Dei" (from "Adagio for Strings") will also be presented in the first half.
The second half of the concert features an eclectic cross-section of secular music. Included is the rousing finale from Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Gondoliers". The rythmical "Shut de Do" by Randy Stonehill, arranged by Mark Hayes and "Jamacian Market Place" by Larry Farrow add a delightful Latin flavor to the concert. Vancouver B.C.'s Jonathan Quick's arrangement of "Loch Lomond" and Frank Clark's arrangement of "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" will also be on the program. A medley of Leonard Bernstein's and Stephen Sondheim's songs from West Side Story will complete the program. For a complete program list, visit our website at: www.skagitvalleychorale.org.
